Reports to: Social Media Strategist
Position Location: Remote in the U.S.
Regular Schedule: 40 hours per week; Actual hours may vary based on organizational needs
Position Summary
Animal Equality is seeking a creative, strategic, and highly motivated Social Media Strategist to grow and strengthen our social media presence. This role will be responsible for developing compelling platform-native content, driving measurable growth, and ensuring our message breaks through the noise.
The ideal candidate is a self-starting strategist and a creator: someone who understands how organic and paid ecosystems inform each other, can write copy that stops a scroll, knows why something lands on TikTok but not on X, and creates content that moves people to act. This person should be comfortable appearing on camera when needed, following and adapting complex narratives to relevant trends, and understanding the numbers that inform their strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute platform-native content strategies that grow organic reach, engagement, and follower base across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads, Reddit, and emerging channels.
- Create and maintain content calendars in collaboration with Communications and Marketing Managers and broader campaign teams.
- Identify and execute on platform trends, algorithm shifts, audience behaviors, and content opportunities that expand our visibility and influence in real time.
- Monitor performance data rigorously, analyze what works and why, and translate those insights into continuously sharpened content strategy and replicable success.
- Appear on camera as needed for educational, campaign, behind-the-scenes, reaction, explainer, and trend-based content.
- Translate complex animal protection issues into accessible, emotionally compelling content for mainstream audiences.
- Collaborate with designers, video editors, campaigners, investigators, and cross-departmental stakeholders to deliver accurate, timely, and innovative content.
- Create compelling social-first content, including copy, short-form videos, graphics concepts, captions, threads, reels, stories, and other platform-native formats if needed.
- Help manage online community engagement, including responding to comments and messages.
- Identify opportunities to engage influencers, creators, partner organizations, and supporters.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- A commitment to Animal Equality’s vision, mission, strategy and culture.
- At least 3 years of demonstrated hands-on social media experience for a brand or mission-driven organization.
- Deep, demonstrated knowledge of Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads, Reddit, and emerging platforms, including distinct audience demographics, content formats, and algorithm behaviors for each.
- Proven track record of growing organic social channels and driving measurable engagement.
- Practical knowledge of paid amplification, boosting, and audience targeting and how this can extend and inform organic wins.
- Fluency in social media analytics tools and the ability to translate data into content decisions; working knowledge of how paid social boosting and audience targeting can amplify and inform organic strategy is a strong plus.
- Demonstrated ability to create engaging short-form video content and comfort appearing on camera as a representative of a mission-driven organization.
- Familiarity with Canva and other image and video editing skills is a plus.
- Creativity, adaptability, and a sharp instinct for what makes people stop scrolling, engage, share, and take action.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize under pressure, and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
- Comfort working with sensitive content related to animal cruelty, investigations, or legal campaigns, and understanding of when messaging requires review or approval.
- Collaborative, proactive, and dependable: able to work independently once given direction, and effectively across teams and departments.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to follow approved messaging closely and understand when language requires review or approval.
- Candidates must be able to sit for extended periods in front of a screen and type.
Compensation:

Benefits package includes 100% employer-covered health, dental, vision insurance, paid child care leave, a generous vacation package, paid sick time, 1 paid volunteer day per year, 2 floating holidays, monthly work-from-home internet stipend, and 401(k) with partial employer match.
