Are you a Senior Bookkeeper or Staff Accountant with deep residential construction accounting experience and a passion for job costing, accuracy, and making the numbers match what is actually happening in the field? We're looking for a highly organized, proactive, and detail-oriented professional to join one of our clients, a residential construction company specializing in high-end custom homes, renovations, and speculative residential projects in Naples, Florida. If you enjoy owning the books across multiple active projects, digging into discrepancies, and bringing problems to management instead of simply entering transactions, this role is for you. This is a full-time remote position supporting a team in the Eastern Time Zone, so flexibility to work during their business hours is required.

BetterPros unlocks human potential by offering competitive compensation, flexibility, constant learning and growth, and the opportunity to work anywhere you want with one of our +130 active clients across the United States.

What you'll do

  • Maintain accurate financial records across 5 to 8 active construction projects simultaneously.

  • Own construction job costing end to end, including cost codes, purchase orders, committed costs, change orders, and work in progress (WIP).

  • Process a high volume of subcontractor and vendor invoices (roughly 600 per project), including receipt photos submitted by project managers directly from the jobsite.

  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely payments, accurate coding, and properly supported records.

  • Prepare and submit construction loan draw packages, adapting to each bank's specific rules, formats, and documentation requirements for disbursements.

  • Handle complex billing scenarios, such as spec homes sold mid-construction where the bank loan funds the base structure while additions and change orders are billed directly to the end client.

  • Perform bank and credit card reconciliations, ensuring every transaction is accurately recorded and supported.

  • Keep QuickBooks Online and Buildertrend aligned so the accounting system reflects the real status of each project in the field.

  • Track job profitability at the project level, flagging cost overruns, margin erosion, and budget variances before they become problems.

  • Identify accounting issues, investigate discrepancies, and escalate them to management with clear context and recommended solutions.

  • Absorb the existing accounting process during a smooth, agile transition from the outgoing fractional CFO, and take full ownership from there.

  • Maintain organized financial records, strengthen internal controls, and identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and operational efficiency.

What you must have

  • Proven experience in residential construction accounting, not general bookkeeping. This is non-negotiable for the role.

  • Advanced English proficiency.

  • 5+ years of bookkeeping or staff accounting experience, with significant time supporting construction companies.

  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online and Buildertrend.

  • Strong command of construction job costing, cost codes, purchase orders, committed costs, change orders, and work in progress reporting.

  • Experience billing construction loans and preparing draw packages under different bank requirements.

  • Experience managing multiple active construction projects at the same time and handling high transaction volume without losing accuracy.

  • Solid experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank and credit card reconciliations.

  • An investigative mindset: the ability to spot problems, research the root cause, and raise them proactively rather than waiting for instructions.

  • Excellent analytical skills and exceptional attention to detail.

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and ownership.

  • Reliable availability during Eastern Time business hours, a consistent work schedule, and interest in long-term professional growth.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience in construction accounting.

A great plus

  • Experience supporting high-end custom home builders, renovations, or speculative residential projects.

  • Experience working alongside a fractional CFO or preparing financial reporting for ownership.

  • Experience preparing budgets, forecasts, and cash flow analyses for construction projects.

  • Experience with additional construction or project management platforms beyond Buildertrend.

  • A track record of improving accounting processes, implementing efficiencies, and strengthening financial controls.

  • Experience mentoring or supervising junior bookkeeping staff.

  • CPA designation.
